چکیده

1 Abstract No past research has addressed the connection between learner models and interaction models. Nor has any previous work accounted for the dynamic modelling of interface contents based on the underlying pedagogic directives. This paper describes how cognitive and computational concepts can be applied to building multimodal interface and learner models a nd for maintaining model consistency throughout long -term tutorial interactions. We show an important influence of an experiment and our cognitive approach to the design of intelligent tutoring systems. This approach includes not only the notion of multipl e dimensions of domain expertise but also the appropriate dialogue factors that can promote the significant aspects of fluency in human -centred, multi modal dialogues. A substantial part of the theoretical findings has been implemented in the RUI prototype system.

Applying learner modelling for user interface assistance in simulative training systems

Simulative case-based training systems in medicine should enable the user to act as a real doctor treating a real patient. This leads to a higher complexity of the user interface (UI), which in turn leads to a higher effort for the user to learn the handling of the UI. In this paper, we present how the adaptive help agent in the training system d3web.Train uses learner modelling to decide wheth...

Novice to Expert continuum may affect System Response Time

To familiarize herself with a user-interface of a software system, a user needs practice. With practice, a user's think time gradually decreases—the novice to expert transition. We propose a queueing model that accounts for this transition in analyzing the performance of a distributed software system. We solve the model using deterministic simulation. Our model captures system performance in te...

A Need for Speed: Adapting Agent Action Speed to Improve Task Learning from Non-Expert Humans

As robots become pervasive in human environments, it is important to enable users to effectively convey new skills without programming. Most existing work on Interactive Reinforcement Learning focuses on interpreting and incorporating non-expert human feedback to speed up learning; we aim to design a better representation of the learning agent that is able to elicit more natural and effective c...

Adapting the User Interface of Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) for Novice Users

The usability of a user interface is often neglected in the design and development of software applications. An Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is prone to poor usability problems due to the rich functionality offered through its User Interface (UI). Since an IDE targets a wide range of users (from novice to expert users), the usability requirement for an IDE vary considerably. Novice ...

Assessment and Content Authoring in Semantic Virtual Environments

Virtual environments (VEs) provide an appealing vehicle for training complex skills, particularly for domains where real-world practice incurs significant time, expense, or risk. Two impediments currently block widespread use of intelligent training tools for VEs. The first impediment is that techniques for assessing performance focus on algorithmic skills that force learners to follow rigid so...
